Always liked the BMW X6 for its coupe-style SUV stance but couldn’t afford it? Or, are you amongst those who like the BMW X3 but want something a bit more stylish? Good news! BMW India has answered your prayers by launching the X4. It will be locally assembled and is available in three variants – 20d, 30i and 30d. They are priced at Rs 60.6 lakh, Rs 63.5 lakh and Rs 65.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. All three, as standard, come in the M Sport X trim and boast BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The BMW X4 in its xDrive20d and xDrive30i features the same engine-transmission combinations as the BMW X3. The former gets a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel mill that puts out 190PS/400Nm, whereas the latter houses a BS VI-compliant 2.0-litre, turbo-petrol motor with 252PS/350Nm on tap. The claimed 0-100kmph sprint times are 8 seconds and 6.3 seconds, respectively. The range-topping X4 in the xDrive30d form gets its juices from a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 265PS/620Nm. 0-100kmph: 6 seconds. It is the same engine that does duty in the BMW 530d. All engines in the X4 come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

On the outside, the BMW X4 gets LED-powered adaptive headlamps, fog lamps and tail lamps, 19-inch light-alloy wheels, powered tailgate, twin-exhaust pipes, sporty side skirts and a low-slung roof spoiler. Inside the cabin, the BMW X4 brings a powered panorama glass roof, ambient lighting with six selectable light designs, a 40:20:40 split rear seat, wireless mobile phone charger, a head-up display, a 16-speaker, 600 watts Harman Kardon sounds system mated to a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and sports seats at the front.

The interior is bathed in ‘Vernasca’ leather upholstery as standard and can be had in four colour combinations. Apart from features like Parking Assistant, a rearview camera, Park Distance Control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control, the X4 also comes with a BMW Display Key and BMW Gesture Control system which recognises six pre-defined hand movements to operate a number of functions.

The coupe-styled SUV, or what BMW calls an SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), also features an adaptive suspension system which tries to keep a perfect balance between comfort and sportiness. The X4 also comes with Auto start-stop feature, ECO Pro mode which is part of the multi-drive modes, brake-energy regeneration, a multifunction electronic steering wheel, dynamic stability control, cornering brake control, six airbags and electric parking brake.

The BMW X4 is available in one non-metallic (Alpine White) and three metallic (Flamenco Red Brilliant Effect, Phytonic Blue and Carbon Black) shades.  In India, it is a direct rival to the Range Rover Evoque and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. Later this year, BMW will also introduce the X7, the all-new 3 Series, Z4 sportscar and the brand-new 8 Series range.
