The X7 Dark Shadow Edition debuted back in July last year as a limited-run model. Only 500 units would be up for grabs globally. Now, it has landed in India. BMW is offering the blacked-out family bus in the M50d spec and asking for a whopping Rs 2.02 crore for it. Compared to the standard X7 M50d, the Dark Shadow Edition costs Rs 36.1 lakh more.

So, what’s unique about the limited-edition X7? To start with, there’s the exclusive paint job. BMW calls it Frozen Arctic Grey metallic. Never has the carmaker finished an X model before in that shade. Accompanying it are the darkened trim pieces, including wing mirror bases, 22-inch alloy wheels, the grille and the roof rails. The M Sport package takes the blacked-out theme a notch higher.

Indoors, the SUV comes with a dual-tone (night blue/black) Merino full leather upholstery from BMW’s Individual range. As for the roof liner, that has an Alcantara finish. The black trim boasts aluminium inserts, which look sharp and accentuate that aura of premium-ness. To highlight the fact that the X7 is a ‘Dark Shadow Edition’, there’s a logo on the Piano Black centre console.

To further justify the price difference, some of the optional equipment comes as standard with the newcomer. The list includes Active Seat Ventilation, Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof, soft-close function for doors, head-up display and five-zone automatic climate control. Features such as launch control, adaptive two-axle air suspension, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 360-degree camera and automatic tailgate operation are part of the kit as well.

Propulsion comes courtesy of a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel engine that pumps out 394bhp/760Nm. The oomph goes through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels via the xDrive system. As a result, the X7 can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 5.4 seconds and reach 250kmph before running into electronic speed-governing systems.

With that price tag, the BMW X7 Dark Shadow Edition falls in the same bucket as the entry-level Range Rover, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Audi RS Q8. The Mercedes-AMG G63 and the Lexus LX570 are two other but costlier options.
