Up until now, the BMW X1 was available in three variants – two petrol and one diesel. However, that total count has now risen to four as a new petrol-powered derivative has been introduced. BMW calls it the X1 sDrive20i Tech Edition, and it is priced at Rs 43 lakh. That means it costs the same as the X1 sDrive20d xLine. However, compared to the other two petrol-powered variants, the new limited-run derivative costs between Rs 1.7 lakh and Rs 4.1 lakh more.

Propulsion comes from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that does duty in the other two petrol variants. It produces 189bhp/280NM, enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 7.7 seconds. The powerplant comes coupled to a 7-speed automatic transmission, which routes all the oomph to the front wheels. As per BMW, the X1 sDrive20i can return a mileage up to 14.82kmpl.

So, you must be wondering why is the latest X1 specimen so much more expensive than the other two, which pack the same powertrain. Well, the hint is in its name – Tech Edition. Yes, it packs a lot more features than the other two. It even trounces the diesel-powered variant on the features front. The extras include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display, wireless mobile charging, a 7-speaker 205-watt sound system and 18-inch alloy wheels (others get 17-inch wheels). The only section where there’s a lack of choice is the colours department. The X1 Tech Edition is available in two shades – Alpine White and Phytonic Blue.

The new variant is perfect for those who like all the bells and whistles in their ride. Come to think of it, the X1 Tech Edition is quite good value compared to the competition. BMW’s compact SUV continues to rival the Volvo XC40, Mini Countryman and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Audi will join the party with the new Q3.
