BMW India has just strengthened its entry-level portfolio with what you see here. Called the 2 Series Gran Coupe, it is essentially a four-door version of the BMW 2 Series Coupe. The newcomer is available in two trim levels, both with the same powertrain logo – 220d. If you opt for the Sportline, the asking price is Rs 39.3 lakh, without taxes. If you want a more aggressive-looking package, you will buy the M Sport derivative, and that costs Rs 41.4 lakh.
The 2 Series Gran Coupe is a compact car. At 4,526mm, it is a tad bit shorter in length than the Honda City. Also, there’s no petrol-powered variant on offer at the moment. BMW India will introduce that at a later stage. The 220d logo means the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. It produces 188bhp/400Nm, while an 8-speed automatic takes care of transmission duties. The setup is enough for a 0-100kmph sprint time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 235kmph. For the record, that powertrain is the same that also propels the X1 (sDrive 20d) and the 3 Series (320d).
In terms of features, both variants offer almost the same stuff. The list includes dual-zone climate control, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic headlamps and wipers, panoramic sunroof, six airbags and cruise control. The reason why the M Sport derivative costs more is that it offers a bit more in the features department. That list incorporates wireless mobile charger, a 10-speaker sound system (Sportline gets a 6-speaker system), BMW Gesture Control, LED fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and a bunch of M badges inside and outside the cabin.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will rival an upcoming Mercedes-Benz – the A-Class Limousine. In the same sort of price bracket, you’ll also have an option from Audi – the Q2. That compact SUV launches tomorrow.
