Thought the F8 Tributo had a funny name but looked jaw-droppingly gorgeous? Well, what you see here is the convertible version of that supercar. Ferrari calls it the F8 Spider. And yes, it looks even better with that retractable hard-top tucked away. In essence, the F8 Spider is a replacement for the 488 Spider which, as most will agree, was probably one of the best-looking cars Ferrari has ever produced. But the F8 Spider just takes good looks a notch higher.
Since we’ve already touched upon its party piece, let’s just get it over with. In just 14 seconds the roof can come out of the boot area and take its place or vice-versa. And those who like to conduct either of those operations on the move can do so at speeds of up to 45kmph. Ferrari claims the F8 Spider is about 20kg lighter than the model it replaces. Compared to the 488 Pista Spider, however, the new entrant is 20kg heavier.
Sitting behind the seats is the same 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 that does duty in the F8 Tributo. All of the 711hp/770Nm is fed to the rear wheels via the F1-derived 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. That setup is enough for a 0-100kmph time of 2.9 seconds, a 0-200kmph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 340kmph. Those figures, in the same order, for the 488 Spider were 3.0 seconds, 8.7 seconds and 325kmph.
Apart from the 49hp/10Nm surplus of oomph, the F8 Spider also benefits from better aerodynamics. And features such as an electronic differential and mixed profile tyres help in attaining those performance figures. The F8 Spider arrives as a direct rival to the McLaren 720S Spider. But, if for some reason, you think the F8 Spider is a bit less for your liking, don’t fret as Ferrari is also readying a drop-top iteration of the 812 Superfast.
