Audi has taken the wraps off the Q4 e-tron Concept at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS). And no, it isn’t one of those drool-enhancing models which are just built to wow onlookers and then forgotten about afterwards. It will be toned-down for feasibility purposes but will go on to become Audi’s fifth pure-electric car. The company will unveil production-version of the Q4 e-tron Concept in the second half of 2020.
Underneath the pretty exterior is Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform which should help make it more affordable than the e-tron. Two electric motors, one for each axle, pump out a total of 306PS of power. While the rear electric motor is gutsier and produces 204PS/310Nm on its own, the part-time front electric motor brings in an additional 102PS/150Nm. It’s the rear electric motor that drives the EV (electric vehicle) most of the time but when there’s a requirement for all-wheel-drive or faster acceleration, the front motor comes into play.
Audi claims that the axle load distribution is nearly 50:50 and that the battery system weighs 510kg. Speaking of which, the all-wheel-drive e-car gets its juices from an 82kWh battery pack which should deliver a range of 450km under the new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) test cycle. Needless to say, there is fast charging support. Audi says that the battery can be juiced-up with a maximum of 125kw feed. That means the battery can replenish 80 per cent of its capacity in charging time of about 30 minutes.
The Audi Q4 e-tron Concept measures 4.59m in length, 1.9m in width, 1.61m in height and has a wheelbase that stretches 2.77m. On the outside, it features humungous 22-inch wheels, LED-powered headlamps and taillamps, conventional yet aerodynamically optimised ORVMs and a bespoke and environment-friendly body paint dubbed as “Solar Sky”. Inside the cabin, the list of features includes Audi’s Virtual Cockpit (digital instrument cluster), a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a sporty multifunction steering wheel and four seats draped in Alcantara.
Audi, like several other major players worldwide, has its plans to attack the market with a range of electrified vehicles. The tag e-tron, however, is reserved for battery-electric vehicles only. The Audi e-tron is already on sale in international markets and is slated to arrive in India sometime soon. Later this year Audi will introduce the Sportback iteration of the e-tron, followed by the Q2L e-tron which is exclusive for the Chinese market. The fourth e-tron model that will enter production next year will be the four-door coupé e-tron GT and then the Q4 e-tron will find its place on the factory floor.
Looks good. Decent specs. Just hope Audi gets the pricing right.
