Saar: With the Boost Mode engaged, Audi’s first-ever EV will deliver 408PS/664Nm.
In about 40 days from today, on September 17, 2018, Audi will uncover its most important car of the year – the e-tron. We already know how the interiors of Audi’s first-ever electric vehicle (EV) look like and also know what kind of electric motors, which will be built in Hungary, it will house. Now though, Audi has revealed a bunch of e-tron’s technical specifications, some of which sound quite interesting. Well, at least in theory!
Let’s start with the powerplant. The dual-electric motors will produce 360PS of power and 561Nm of torque. Audi says that the e-tron can deliver this peak performance for up to 60 seconds. The time cap allows the Audi e-tron’s powertrain to accelerate from a standstill to the electronically limited top speed of 200kmph several times consecutively without output loss. Audi won’t say how quickly the e-tron can reach those speeds.
But, if you want more oomph from the electric engine, you can shift from drive range D to S and fully depress the accelerator to activate boost mode. It is only available for eight seconds but the power output from the electric motors shoots up to 408PS/664Nm. Audi says that the sprint from nought to 100kmph in the e-tron takes less than 6 seconds. On a full charge of its 95kWh battery pack, the e-tron can travel over 400km.
The more noteworthy aspect of the e-tron’s technical abilities is how it uses the recuperation system to extend its overall travel range by up to 30 per cent. Audi claims that for each kilometre driven downhill, the e-tron can gain nearly as much as back using its recuperation system. For the system to work in the most efficient manner, it has three different recuperation modes to replenish its battery pack as frequently as possible. Apart from the usual regenerative braking, there’s also automatic coasting recuperation and manual coasting recuperation. While the former of the last two uses Audi’s predictive driving tech, the latter comes into effect by using the shift paddles.
Audi has ensured that apart from being powerful enough, the powertrain is efficient too. After the e-tron goes on sale later this year, it will be joined by a Sportback iteration of its own self next year. Eventually, the e-tron branding will further expand into Audi’s sedan and supercar categories.
