Aston Martin is slowly but steadily opening up about its upcoming hypercar – the Valkyrie. In its latest announcement, the carmaker confirmed it has started manufacturing prototypes of the Valkyrie, which will be put through a testing regime to fine-tune the overall package. Apart from that, the British marque has also shared some details about the Valkyrie’s powertrain. Contrary to Cosworth’s accidental tweet from August 2018, the Valkyrie will have a hybrid powertrain.
Here are some delicious numbers. The Cosworth-developed 6.5-litre V12 will, all on its own, will produce 1,014PS of peak power at 10,500rpm and 740Nm of maximum torque at 7,000rpm. Do you reckon that this engine has some connection with the world of Formula 1? You are correct! V12 engines were last used in F1 cars in the 1990s. The monster powering the Valkyrie comes from the same era but is way more efficient and, more importantly, is the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine ever fitted to any production car.
As a product, the Valkyrie will be less about on-road performance and more about attacking land speed records, especially around famous race tracks. To hone the car on that front, Aston Martin also roped its F1 partner – Red Bull Advanced Technologies – to get some real depth of engineering into the Valkyrie’s recipe. Both the V12 and the gearbox case, for instance, are part of Valkyrie’s structure. The result is higher structural rigidity and the need for additional strengthening materials is gone.
Over to what makes the Valkyrie a hybrid. Mated to the V12 is electric power-plant which is capable of producing 162PS/260Nm. Aston Martin claims that the total power and torque output is 1,176PS at 10,500rpm and 900Nm at 6,000rpm, respectively. The Valkyrie will also feature techy stuff like Power Boost and KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). The carmaker joined hands with Integral Powertrain Ltd. for the electric motor and Rimac for the hybrid battery system.
So, there it is. A full-fledged, no-nonsense hyper-car is heading our way. Fast. Expect Aston Martin to reveal more about the Valkyrie, albeit in bit and pieces, as the D-Day for its world premiere nears.
