Say hello to Toyota-Suzuki’s second love-child for India – the Urban Cruiser. With prices ranging between Rs 8.4 lakh and Rs 11.3 lakh, it arrives to crowd the already crowded subcompact SUV space further. The rebadged and mildly-restyled Vitara Brezza is available in six variants, covering three trim levels, two transmission options and one engine. Here’s how the complete price list looks like:

Now, to create those variants what Toyota did was take Vitara Brezza’s VXI, ZXI and ZXI+ trim levels and rename them as Mid, High and Premium, respectively. Genius! With that gameplay, Toyota can proudly claim that even the least-expensive variant comes with stuff like LED projector headlamps, electrically-adjustable and foldable ORVMs, rear defogger, a multifunction steering wheel, push-button start-stop and automatic climate control.

Climb higher on the trim tree and the Toyota Urban Cruiser ropes in additional features such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED-powered DRLs and fog lamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, auto-dimming IRVM, cruise control, auto-folding ORVMs, auto-headlamps, rain-sensing wipers and a rear-view camera.

Powering all derivatives of the Urban Cruiser is the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine. It produces a modest 104bhp/138Nm and comes coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. Those who want the convenience of a two-pedal setup can opt for the 4-speed automatic gearbox. Do that, and the engine will also come mated to a mild-hybrid system. That, as you’d know, not only helps in quicker acceleration but also boosts fuel economy.

So, has Toyota done anything to slide the Urban Cruiser away from the donor model? A bit. The front grille, for instance, is different and Fortuner-like; there’s a new colour option (Rustic Brown); the interior upholstery features a different brown finish, and the standard warranty is 3 years/1,00,000km. Deliveries will commence from mid-October 2020.

Toyota is late in joining the hugely popular sub-4 metre SUV space. The Urban Cruiser will face heat from not only the Vitara Brezza but also the Honda WR-V, Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon and the Kia Sonet. Soon, Mahindra will widen the options further with the addition of the BS6-compliant TUV300. That’s not all as Nissan (Magnite) and Renault (Kiger) are readying their offerings to try and steal a slice of the massive pie (market share).
