Pure car bores know how Mercedes-Benz segregates its range of products. It makes use of different alphabets, either alone or with a prefix like GL or CL. Soon, however, a new character will join the company’s product portfolio – T. Now, give it a read – Mercedes-Benz T-Class. So, what type of product will the Germans put under the new category? Are you ready? It’ll be a minivan.

Mercedes-Benz EQV

Heartbreak? So be it! Don’t forget that apart from making tyre-shredding machines like the AMG GT, Mercedes-Benz also has a sensible list of cars which click well with those looking for a family car. The thing is Mercedes-Benz needed a practical van-type offering that could sit under the V-Class in the product tree. The company says that the new vehicle will offer enough to entice private customers, and they will get to buy one from 2022.

It’s too soon to talk about specifics. But you could draw a taste from what the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Marcus Breitschwerdt, said about the upcoming offering:

With the new Mercedes-Benz T-Class, we will offer a vehicle which makes it possible for families and those with active pastimes to step into the Mercedes-Benz world. These customers seek attractive and practical compact vehicles – and it is precisely these demands which the new T-Class fulfils.

So, why the letter T? Why not something else, like a small ‘v’ or something? Well, Mercedes-Benz has an answer for that too. It says:

The letter T stands for efficient room concepts and is thus perfectly suited as a model designation for compact family vans bearing the three-pointed star.

Are you still searching for some finer details? Okay. Mercedes-Benz will make the T-Class in collaboration with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. The T-Class will boast sliding doors on both sides. They work well in tight car parking spaces. Ingress and egress will be easy, says Mercedes-Benz. And like the V-Class, alongside the conventional drive systems, the T-Class will also have a fully-electric variant. An EQT? Sounds weird!
