Saar: From July 2018, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will be offered with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine.
BMW has revealed that from July this year, the 6 Series Gran Turismo will get a new entry-level engine. That engine will be the same 2.0-litre turbo-diesel unit that does duty in several other BMW models, including the X3 and the 5 Series. It will pump out the same oomph too – 190PS/400Nm and will come mated to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. BMW claims that the 620d Gran Turismo will be able to complete the 0-100kmph sprint in 7.9 seconds. That’s 0.4 seconds slower than the BMW 520d.
The reason behind BMW 620d Gran Turismo being slower in the 0-100kmph sprint is because of its kerb weight. It is heavier than the comparable 5 Series and hence won’t be as fuel-efficient either. To put things in perspective, the BMW 520d returns a claimed mileage of 22.48kmpl. With more weight to lug around, expect the BMW 620d Gran Turismo to return nearly 2kmpl less than that. The top-speed for the 62od Gran Turismo is clocked at 220kmph.

In several European markets, the BMW 620d Gran Turismo will introduce a fifth engine in the 6 Series lineup. In India, however, the 6 Series Gran Turismo is currently available only with a single engine option. That’s a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol that puts out 258PS of power and 400Nm of torque. It is the same engine that does duty in the BMW 530i but produces 6PS/50Nm more in the 6 Series GT.
We expect the BMW 620d Gran Turismo to make it to India as well, but only in the Sport Line variant. Not only will it add a diesel option in the 6 Series portfolio, but also give the Mercedes-Benz E 220 d, which will be its direct rival, a run for its money. The BMW 630i GT Sport Line is priced at Rs 60.8 lakh (ex-showroom India). The BMW 620d Gran Turismo, whenever it launches in India, is expected to cost around Rs 2 lakh less than that.
