Saar: The company will launch the compact SUV as part of its ‘India 2.0’ project.
Earlier this month, Volkswagen released the first-ever teaser image, which was technically a glorified sketch, of the T-Cross compact SUV. Back then, we had speculated that it could very well be Volkswagen’s answer to the Hyundai Creta in India as it will be underpinned by the MQB-A0 platform, the chosen one for all mass-market products for both Skoda and Volkswagen. Well, a report has now confirmed that T-Cross is definitely coming to India.
According to the report, the vehicle will make its global debut this year and go on sale in Europe this spring. Volkswagen will then launch the T-Cross in the South American market, followed by its entry into China and then in India. Andreas Krueger said that it won’t be sold in the North American market because it is too compact for the market. In a more price-conscious market like India, the Volkswagen T-Cross will fit rather well.
Around the same time when Volkswagen released the first sketch of the T-Cross, it also revealed the plans for the ‘India 2.0’ project. As per that the first product, which will be underpinned by the MQB-A0-IN platform, will launch in the year 2020. That will be a compact SUV and will wear a Skoda badge. However, Volkswagen will use the same recipe to restyle, repackage and rebadge the product to launch its own version soon afterwards. That’s where the T-Cross badge will come in.
Under the hood, the India-spec Volkswagen T-Cross is expected to house a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which will also be locally produced. The same engine is offered in other Volkswagen products, such as the new Polo, in several international markets. It can be mated to a 5- or a 6-speed manual transmission as well as to the 7-speed automatic which is popularly known as the DSG. Out of the four state of tunes, we expect Volkswagen to use the 115PS/200Nm for the T-Cross in India. Those figures should help the Volkswagen product to create a space for itself amongst product like the Renault siblings – Duster and Captur, the Nissan Terrano and the king of the segment – the Hyundai Creta.
