Saar: It will be a hard-top version of the T-Cross Breeze Concept from the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
Who remembers the 2016 Geneva Motor Show? We are pretty sure not many! But we would like to just touch upon that particular event because Volkswagen flaunted a compact SUV concept in the form of the T-Cross Breeze. Why Breeze? Because it was a soft-top, high-riding head-turner. Now though, Volkswagen has released a teaser sketch and a 45-second video for the T-Cross SUV. It will be a hard-top version of the concept shown in Switzerland over two years ago and in the Volkswagen product portfolio, will slot beneath the T-Roc. Here’s the video:
Normally, we don’t cover cars which are made to sell outside India, unless they have something interesting going on for themselves. This one though could quite possibly be Volkswagen’s answer to the Hyundai Creta in India. It will be underpinned by the MQB-A0 platform and hence falls right in line for Volkswagen Group to tweak, localise and launch it as part of its ‘India 2.0’ project.
In the official teaser image, as you can see, only the rear is shown. Volkswagen says that it is from a “near-production prototype”. But then OEMs always say that sort of thing. Whatever the case be, the prominent feature at the rear is the taillamps which stretch across the width of the SUV. The rear bumper seems to have a faux diffuser-type styling with reflectors at either end. The curved windshield at the rear is accompanied by a sporty spoiler and there are contrasting roof rails too. We believe it could be the first funky Volkswagen product that India might receive.
We’ve also managed to capture some screen grabs from the video. The front flaunts Volkswagen latest design language. The front grille stretches all the way to meet the headlamp enclosures at both ends and the chiselled front bumper houses trapezoidal fog lamps. What’s also worth noticing that in this compact form, Volkswagen could have gone for a three-door setup. But from the video and the sketch, it is pretty evident that it will come with a five-door configuration.
As far as the engines, kit and interior aura are concerned, the Volkswagen T-Cross is likely to borrow them from the new Polo. The unveiling of the production-spec T-Cross is likely to happen before the end of this year.
