It turns out our prediction was wrong. When Tata Motors unveiled Ziptron tech last month, we were quite confident that the first EV (Electric Vehicle) to get it would be the all-electric Altroz. We are not going to guess anymore at which number it will come in, and Tata Motors has certainly not shared that information either. However, the company has confirmed what will become the first product to feature its next-gen EV tech. It will be Nexon. Somewhat predictably, it will be called the Nexon EV.
So, when does it arrive? Thanks to the headline, you have a rough idea already. To be a bit more specific, the Nexon EV will launch in the last quarter of the current financial year. In other words, before the calendar reads April 1, 2020, the said zero-emissions vehicle would have received a price tag. Tata Motors has not revealed any confirmed set of details, but it did mention that the target range is about 300km. That is more than twice of what the Tata Tigor EV can manage. For the uninitiated, the Tigor EV is available to purchase but only for commercial purpose.
That brings us neatly to another highlight of the Nexon EV. Unlike the Tigor EV, the SUV will be available for personal use. What’s more, it is slated to become Tata’s first product to feature 30+ connected car features, including location-based services, vehicle health monitoring and security alerts. Think that you have heard something similar recently? Well, you did! The source? The Hyundai Elantra facelift.
Over the coming weeks, Tata Motors will unravel more about its first Ziptron-powered product. We already know that the powertrain adheres to IP67 levels of dust- and water-proofing and that the lithium-ion battery will come with a warranty of eight years. However, what do you reckon will be the asking price? As per its maker, the Nexon EV is expected to fall somewhere in the Rs 15-17 lakh bracket. Before you frown on that, consider this – the range-topping, conventionally-powered Nexon costs Rs 11.1 lakh.
