It was only a matter of time before Tata Motors did this – the Tiago is now compliant with the upcoming new car safety norms which will come into effect from July 1, 2019. How? No matter which variant you choose, the standard list of safety features will include ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, seatbelt alert for driver and front passenger, dual airbags, Corner Stability Control (CSC), over-speeding warning and seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.
Obviously, the addition of features has had an impact on the asking price of the Tata Tiago. The range now starts at Rs 4.4 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). That means a bump of around Rs 16,000 than before. Tata Motors says that the newly packaged hatchbacks have started reaching its authorised showroom across the country.
In January this year, we reported that ABS, EBD and CSC became part of Tiago’s standard kit. Prior to that, these safety features were part of the XZ and XZ+ trim levels only. The following month saw Tata Motors announcing the 2-lakh sales milestone for its pocket-friendly hatchback. And, in April 2019, the homegrown automaker added the convenience of Apple CarPlay on the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is available only on the range-topping trim.
The Tiago is currently available with three engine-transmission combinations. The 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which is good for 85PS/114Nm, can be had with either a 5-speed manual or an AMT (automated manual transmission). The 1.05-litre, 3-cylinder diesel mill puts out 70PS/140Nm and comes coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission only. From April 1, 2020, when India will migrate to Bharat Stage VI (BSVI) standards of emission norms, expect Tata Motors to only offer an upgraded petrol engine with the Tiago as it plans to axe the diesel mill altogether.
