As we are well aware, Porsche doesn’t produce cars in India. All models it offers are brought in as direct imports. And that business method attracts mahusive duties, making cars way more expensive than they would be if locally produced. Despite all that, Porsche makes good money in India. And going by the luxury carmaker’s sales performance in the first quarter of 2021, things are looking up.

Math time. Compared to the sales numbers from Q1 2020, Porsche India recorded a growth of 52 per cent in the same quarter this year. It retailed a total of 154 cars in Q1 2021. The brand says the refreshed Panamera played a critical role. To the end of March 2021, Porsche delivered an average of one Panamera every week. Besides that, the German carmaker sold the highest number of Macan SUVs in a quarter since 2015.

More numbers? Courtesy of Macan’s performance, Porsche clocked a 38 per cent increase in delivery of SUVs compared to the same duration last year. Also, the demand for two-door sports cars – 911, 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman – went up by 26 per cent in Q1 2021 over the same period in 2020.

Here’s what Manolito Vujicic, who is the brand head for Porsche India, said about the company’s performance in an official release:

Despite the everchanging pandemic-related measures, we have managed to outperform our quarterly sales results of the past seven years and secured the highest first-quarter order intake in five years. This drives our motivation for the coming months. We at Porsche India are incredibly proud of the effort and hard work from our business partners to achieve this result. We must also thank our customers who have remained loyal and helped us achieve this fantastic result to make Porsche India one of the fastest-growing luxury automotive brands across the country in 2021.

Apart from introducing updated and new models, including the Taycan, Porsche is concentrating on upgrading and expanding its sales and service network. It plans to open five new facilities in major Indian cities over the next twelve months. Expect news about a dealership in Benagulu soon.
