Mark your calendars, car enthusiasts! The date is November 12, 2021. That’s when Porsche will introduce two new models – the Macan III and the much-awaited Taycan. The former made its global debut in July this year. The EV, on the other hand, has been in the automotive world a bit longer than that. As of now, there’s no word on which variants of both those cars will launch in India.
New Macan
The new crossover debuted in three variants – standard, S and GTS. We hope Porsche brings all three derivatives to our shores because the next-gen version will be pure electric. Besides a tweaked exterior and heavily redone interior, the Macan III also gets punchier powertrains. In standard form, the Macan comes with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 261bhp. The Macan S, on the other hand, gets a 2.9-litre unit that pumps out 375bhp. Even in GTS spec, the crossover gets the same engine but with 434bhp on tap. All the variants come with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.
Once launched, the new Macan will compete against models such as the Jaguar F-Pace, Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.
Taycan
The Taycan family has two branches – Sport Saloon and Cross Turismo. But, in all likelihood, the four-door sedan will land first in two variants – standard and 4S. The former is the entry-level derivative, powered by a rear-mounted electric motor. The oomph depends on what kind of battery it comes with. With the Performance Battery (PB), which has a gross capacity of 79.2 kWh, the standard output is 322bhp. However, the larger 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus (PBP) shoots the power up to 375bhp. Engaging the Launch Control allows the Taycan to offer more punch. It puts out 402bhp/345Nm with PB and 469bhp/357Nm with PBP.
The smaller battery offers a range of up to 431km, whereas the larger pack can last for up to 484km. Both those figures are as per WLTP standards. As for charging capabilities, PB can recharge with a feed of up to 225kW, whereas PBP can take up to 270kW. Under ideal conditions, both can replenish themselves from 5 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes.
Coming to the 4S, it has two electric motors. And like the standard Taycan, the 4S also has the same battery options. With PB in place, it offers up to 523hp/640Nm and a range of up to 407km. Those numbers go up to 563hp/650Nm and 463km, with PBP doing its thing. Charging capabilities are the same as mentioned above.
The only real rival for the Porsche Taycan in India is its step-sibling – the Audi e-tron GT. That, like the Porsche, is available in two variants. It went on sale earlier this year.
