Remember the Polo Turbo TSI Edition that came to our little world earlier this year? Besides a flashy makeover, the limited-run derivative offered a lot more at a mouth-watering price. Of course, the main highlight was the 109bhp/175Nm 1.0-litre TSI engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Sadly, Volkswagen has pulled the plug on the Polo Turbo TSI Edition. Also, it has given the hatchback a revised price list along with a new enticing variant.
That new variant is the Comfortline TSI MT. Priced between Rs 7.41 lakh (non-metallic) and Rs 7.51 lakh (metallic), it costs Rs 30,000 more than the corresponding Comfortline MPI derivatives. The new variant means that even though Volkswagen has taken away the Turbo TSI Edition, one need not spend too much for a turbocharged hatchback. Before this, the TSI engine was reserved for Highline Plus variants and the Polo GT.
In Comfortline TSI MT form, the Polo costs between Rs 98,000 and Rs 1.08 lakh less than the Highline Plus MT variant. The latter packs more features, such as 16-inch alloy wheels, cornering lights, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, electrically foldable ORVMs, front armrest with rear AC vents and auto-dimming IRVM. Also, the option of an automatic transmission is still with Highline Plus and GT trim levels.
Besides quietly introducing the new variant, Volkswagen has also given the Polo a revised price list. The Trendline and Comfortline variants, with MPI engine, now demand Rs 15,000 more. As for the Highline Plus and GT derivatives, they cost Rs 14,800 and Rs 7,200 more.
The Volkswagen Polo is long overdue for a generation change in India. Even though Volkswagen has updated the car’s recipe over the years, it feels dated. The Polo falls in the same segment as the Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20 and the Toyota Glanza. Where would you put your money?
