Saar: The combined power output of the 3.0-litre V6 and the electric engine is rated at 462PS/700Nm.
Behold! The new Porsche Cayenne finally gets a Plug-in hybrid variant. Porsche, in its simple lingo, calls it the Cayenne E-Hybrid. And let’s get straight to the powerplant shall we? The 3.0-litre V6 internal combustion engine, which on its own produces 340PS of power, is mated to an electric engine, which puts out 136PS of power alone. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid has a total system power of 462PS/700Nm. Those figures are impressive and they need to be because of the added weight onto an already heavy vehicle.
Porsche claims that the Cayenne E-Hybrid weighs a smidge under 2.3 tonnes unladen. To be precise, it is 2,295kg and to put things in perspective, that’s 310kg more than the Porsche Cayenne V6. Even so, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid can complete the 0-100kmph sprint in just 5 seconds (1.2 seconds faster than the Cayenne V6) and reach a top speed of 253kmph (8kmph more than the Cayenne V6). The tweaked 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission sends the power to an all-wheel-drive system to keep the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid calm and composed.
Of course, the real party piece with the E-Hybrid is the ability to drive it on electric power only. Porsche claims that it can be driven up to a distance of 44km and a speed of 135kmph on electric power alone. Porsche has also equipped the Cayenne E-Hybrid with the boost technology, derived from the 918 Spyder supercar. Essentially, with this boost engaged, all the torque is available as soon as the accelerator is pressed. That’s something pure-electric vehicles have by default.

As far as battery capacity is concerned, the new Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid gets a bigger stack. It has gone up from 10.8 to 14.1kWh. Math lovers will do their thing to find that’s 30 per cent more than before. With a standard 10amp/230V connection and a 3.6 kW charger, the battery gets all its juices in 7.8 hours. That last figure drops to 2.3 hours if the optional 7.2 kW charger is mated to a 32amp/230V electricity feed.
Still wondering why we mentioned that the new Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid has more than just a “greener” heart? Well, Porsche has introduced some additional stuff with this variant. For the first time ever in a Porsche mass-produced product, there’s a head-up display. Other new features include the digital copilot Porsche InnoDrive with adaptive cruise control, massage seats, heated windscreen and 22-inch lightweight metal wheels.
For now, Porsche has launched the Cayenne E-Hybrid in its home country only. That’s Germany. Later this month, it will launch in other European markets and soon after that will go sale on the other side of the pond as well. For India, however, Porsche is yet to launch the standard variants of the new Cayenne. That said, Porsche India’s official website does have the prices of the Cayenne Turbo. Will the E-Hybrid variant make it here too? Well, there is no harm in offering something that will be brought into India as a completely built unit.
