In its latest avatar, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is underpinned by the HEARTECT platform. It is the same skeleton that does duty in several other Maruti Suzuki models such as the Ignis, Swift, Baleno and the Ertiga. The new platform has given the WagonR some more room to play with and hence is bigger on the outside, roomier on the inside and still lighter on the feet than its predecessor.
The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available in seven variants, covering two engine and transmission options each. The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 68PS/90Nm, has been carried forward and is available in Lxi and Vxi trims. While the entry-level trim comes with a 5-speed manual transmission, the mid-spec Vxi trim can also be had with a 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). Maruti Suzuki claims that with the AGS, the engine can return up to 22.5kmpl. For the record, the carmaker calls the AMT as AGS – Auto Gear Shift.
The other engine option, which is also available with the same set of transmissions as mentioned above, is a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine which puts out 83PS/113Nm. It is, in fact, the same engine that does duty in other Maruti Suzuki models such as the Swift, Dzire and the Ignis. In the new WagonR, the engine returns a claimed mileage of 21.5kmpl.
As you might have guessed by now, the new Maruti Suzuki WagonR is also more feature-rich than before. The standard set of gizmos includes a driver’s side airbag, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, front seat belts reminder and speed alert system. If you opt for the fully-loaded version of the car, the list of features will also include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, fog lamps, rear defogger, a multifunction steering wheel, front passenger-side airbag and electrically adjustable and foldable OVRMs.
Maruti Suzuki is offering a total of six colour options for the new WagonR. They are – Poolside Blue, Nutmeg Brown, Magma Grey, Autumn Orange, Silky Silver and Superior White. The new WagonR renews its rivalry with the Hyundai Santro, Tata Tiago and the Datsun Go.
