MG Motor India can, of course, trace its roots back to the UK via a stopover in China. For announcing the name of its first-ever product for India, the company has tried to do a ‘James Bond’ thing. See if you can spot it in the image above. All we wondered was what the name of the SUV is? The answer: The name is Hector, MG Hector!
Jokes aside, the Hector will be a critical product for the company for obvious reasons. MG Motor India will be taking the wraps off the Hector in April and launch it by June this year. Obviously, it is difficult to fathom how the SUV looks either from the teaser image or from the camouflaged test mule in the video below.
But we can unravel a few details about the upcoming SUV. The Hector won’t feature a fully digital instrument cluster. That’s pretty clear from the video above and doesn’t fall in line with our earlier speculation. What’s also clear is that the MG Hector will have dual-function LED eyebrows. In other words, the LED DRLs will also function as turn indicators. Please don’t blame us on how their placement at the front makes them look like eyebrows! If you really want to relate it something, think of the Tata Harrier and its dual-function LED-powered DRLs.
If we go back to the teaser image, we can see that the MG Hector remarkably resembles a model called Baojun 530, which is on sale in China. Baojun, like MG Motor, is also owned by SAIC (formally known as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). If we take the Baojun 530 into consideration, the Hector will not just be bigger than its direct rivals such as the Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier and Hyundai Tucson, but also the Honda CR-V. Of course, the real specifications will reveal the true story in a few months.
As reported earlier, the MG Hector will be available with petrol and diesel engine options. While it is currently unknown which petrol engine will MG Motor India source from its own catalogue, the diesel engine will be bought from FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Specifically, the same 2.0-litre mill that currently does duty in the Compass and will also power the upcoming Harrier.
So, there you have it. The MG Hector is heading our way, fast. The question is, will its package be intriguing enough for customers to have a rethink and ditch the established brands? Only time will tell.
