Saar: The company boss has reportedly said that the F1’s successor, which will have more than 1,000PS on tap, isn’t about setting top speed or lap records.

It was in July this year when McLaren announced the name of its F1 successor. Dubbed as the Speedtail, we could immediately relate the name to a bespoke, one-off Rolls-Royce model from last year – the Sweptail. However, not much will be common between the two. Where the Sweptail was a show-off and had a price tag of approximately 10 million GBP, the Speedtail’s production is limited to 106 units, all of which have been sold at 1.6 million GBP plus taxes.

McLaren confirmed that a public debut of the Speedtail can be expected by the end of this year. However, the car will only enter production by the end of next year. But before any of that happens, a report has unveiled some interesting aspects of the McLaren Speedtail. The company’s head honcho Mike Flewitt has reportedly confirmed that the F1’s successor will have more than 1,000PS on tap. Like the McLaren P1, the Speedtail will use a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain but will be tuned differently.

Flewitt also said that the Speedtail isn’t about setting top speed records. From that, we can safely deduce that the three-seater won’t be about setting lap records on fire either. We already know that the Speedtail will outgun the F1’s top speed by about 5kmph and will touch 391kmph at full stretch. The boss also went on to mention that the Speedtail will be “lighter, aerodynamic, super comfortable and super to drive. It will comfortably enough to take a 2,000-mile tour.”

Based on what Flewitt had to say about the upcoming hybrid “Hyper-GT”, we have a sneaking suspicion that McLaren is actually targeting to take on the like of the Bugatti and not track-focused monsters from brands like Hennessey and Koenigsegg. Let’s put it this way, whatever Flewitt mentioned about the character of the Speedtail, it closely resembles to what the Veyron did a few years ago and what the Chiron offers now.
