Saar: A McLaren 570S Spider, finished in Curacao Blue shade, became the 15,000th car.

A production of 15,000 units is a child’s play for any mass market player in the automotive world. But for a brand that produces nothing else but super sportscars, that number marks quite a milestone. McLaren Automotive, which began its production in the year 2011, has crossed the production mark of 15,000 cars. That means it took just seven years to achieve that mark. Which car was the 15,000th one? It was a McLaren 570S Spider, finished in Curacao Blue shade.

The really astonishing part is that only 18 months ago, McLaren reached the milestone of producing 10,000 cars from its sole factory in Woking, England. To cater to the high demand from over 30 markets around the globe, McLaren introduced a second production shift in the year 2016. That helped the company produce twice as many cars per day as it had previously.

McLaren Senna

In the year 2017, McLaren sold 3,340 cars. Around two-thirds of that figure came from the Sports Series and the rest from the Super Series of McLaren Automotive product lines. While the former category includes three 570 derivatives – 570GT, 570S Spider and 570S Coupe, the latter one comprises 650S Coupe, 650S Spider, 675LT and 720S. The McLaren Senna, which is part of the Ulitmate Series category, recently entered production and the first of just 500 customer cars will be completed soon.

It was in 2010 when McLaren Automotive was set up as an independent company. Its production facility took 14 months to complete before its first-ever model, the McLaren 12C, rolled off the production. In 2012, the 12C Coupe was joined by its Spider sibling, taking the count of offerings to two. What followed in 2013, left the world of automobiles in shock. The McLaren P1TM took the crown of becoming the world’s first hybrid hypercar.

Ever since the British brand has been playing safe and producing models more suited to day-to-day lives. The year 2014 saw the launch of the 650S, followed by the 570S, 540C, 675LT and P1TM GTR in 2015. Next year saw the introduction of the 675LT Spider and the year after that came 720S, 570S and McLaren Senna. In the near future, McLaren Automotive will open the McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) in Sheffield, England, where it will produce carbon fibre chassis.
