Maruti Suzuki, as we all know, is the most dominant force in the Indian car scene. Month-on-month and year-on-year, it sets sales charts on fire. A byproduct of that is reaching monumental sales milestones. In the last five weeks, the Indo-Japanese carmaker has reported a total of seven achievements. So, we thought you need to be aware of them.

Raising the bar: Baleno

In October, the Baleno celebrated its fourth anniversary in India. On November 21, 2019, Maruti Suzuki claimed that the lifetime sales count for its premium hatchback had surpassed the 6.5 lakh-mark (600,000). Simple math reveals that ever since the car went on sale, it registered an average annual sales of 1.5 lakh (150,000) units. Dive a bit further, and the numbers 12,500 and 411 pop up as the average monthly and daily sales count, respectively. If you don’t understand numbers, digest a simple fact – the Baleno is the undisputed king of its segment.

Fifteen years on, still going strong: Alto

Before November 2019 came to a close, Maruti Suzuki announced that the Alto had achieved something that no other car has done in the Indian automobile industry. In fifteen years, the Alto has registered over 38 lakh (3.8 million) sales for its maker. Quick calculations reveal that on average, over 2.53 lakh (253,000) units, 21,111 units, and 694 units found buyers annually, monthly, and daily, respectively. As per Maruti Suzuki, nearly 54 per cent of Alto customers are first-time car buyers. In simple words, the Alto has been the bestselling car in India for the past fifteen years.

Breaching the 20 million-mark

On December 14, 1983, Maruti Suzuki rolled out its first-ever model in India – the iconic Maruti 800. Fast-forward to the 1994-95 fiscal year – the company surpassed 10 lakh (1 million) lifetime sales. During 2005-06, that figure had gone past the 50 lakh-mark (5 million). The 1 and 1.5 crores (10 million and 15 million) landmarks came by in 2011-12 and 2016-17, respectively. And, in November this year, the company’s lifetime sales count crossed two crores (20 million). Notice how the gap between the milestones reduced over the years. Here’s another one – it took Maruti Suzuki nearly 29 years to sell the first 10 million units. The next 10 million found households in just eight years.

Two-pedal tech in demand

Maruti Suzuki’s first model to gain a two-pedal setup was the Celerio. That happened in 2014. Since then and until earlier this month, more than 6 lakh (600,000) units equipped with one of the three automatic transmissions Maruti Suzuki offers have found takers. As per the company, the demand for an automatic transmission has risen exponentially. In 2018-19 alone, Maruti Suzuki sold over 2 lakh units equipped with either an AMT, an AT (torque-converter), or a CVT. A total of eight models in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio have AMT-equipped derivatives. The Ciaz, Ertiga and the XL6 are available with torque-converters. The CVT, however, is on offer with the Baleno only.

Tallboy turns 20

In 1999, India saw the introduction of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. With its boxy proportions and reliable recipe, it quickly became a favourite for those who wanted something big on the inside and compact on the outside. The year 2019 saw the tallboy complete 20 years in India. Over the two decades, more than 24 lakh (2.4 million) WagonRs found buyers. That’s approximately 1.2 lakh (120,000) sales annually, 12,000 monthly, and 329 daily. As per the company, close to 25 per cent of the total sales came from repeat customers. The all-new WagonR, which went on sale in January 2019, breached past the 1 lakh (100,000) sales mark in just seven months.

Ertiga goes past half-a-million sales

The first-gen Ertiga was with us for about seven years. During that period, Maruti Suzuki sold just over 4.18 lakh (418,000) units of the MPV. The second-gen model, which arrived in India in November last year, has already garnered over 1 lakh (100,000) sales. Put together, the compact MPV’s lifetime sales count went past half-a-million sales in eight years. This performance has helped Maruti Suzuki increase its MPV market share from 25.3 per cent to a whopping 50.3 per cent.

Dzire’s still very much desirable

Between April and November 2019, Maruti Suzuki sold over 1.2 lakh (120,000) units of the Dzire. Performance such as this has helped the sub-4 metre sedan to not only become the bestselling car in the first eight months of the current fiscal but also retain a majority market share in the segment. The latter, as per Maruti Suzuki, is quantifiably over 60 per cent. As things stand, the Dzire has been the most selling sedan for over a decade. Until now, over 20 lakh (2 million) units have found takers.
