Over decades, Maruti Suzuki has set multiple records for others to follow. Stuff like clocking 40 lakh sales for a model (Alto) and having the most comprehensive sales and service network in India. How other carmakers wish they could get close to the kind of sales that the Indo-Japanese brand bags year after year!
But, Maruti Suzuki’s latest feat is just outright astonishing. For the fourth consecutive year (2020-21), India’s five top-selling cars wore those Suzuki badges. Leading the pack was the Swift with over 1.72 lakh sales, followed by the Baleno at 1.63 lakh units. Bagging the podium’s third spot was WagonR, which clocked 1.6 lakh sales. The Alto at 1.59 lakh units and Dzire with 1.28 lakh sales occupied the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Alto, Swift, Dzire, WagonR and Baleno have been the top five selling cars in India since 2017-18. Maruti Suzuki says that those five models accounted for nearly 30 per cent of total industry sales in 2020-21. As a bonus, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was the top-selling subcompact SUV in India. And, by deduction, the bestselling SUV in the country. Out of the top ten bestselling cars in India last fiscal, seven were Maruti Suzukis. And get this – for over a decade, the top four selling cars in the country have been Maruti Suzukis.
In February 2021, the company introduced the refreshed Swift. Besides boasting a tweaked look, the hot-selling hatchback also gained a gutsier petrol engine and a few additional features. This month, India’s largest carmaker received a boost in production capacity as Suzuki commenced operations at Plant C of its Gujarat manufacturing hub. With that running at full capacity alongside Plant A and B, Maruti Suzuki can get up to 7.5 lakh made-in-Gujarat cars to sell locally or ship overseas. Plant A makes the Baleno, while B is for the Swift. As for the newest production line, that’s for the Dzire sedan at the moment.
