Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL), which celebrates its silver jubilee this year, has started paving the path to unveil and launch a new product. Stories and rumours about the said model have been making rounds for about a year. Now, we have some concrete information. It will be called the Alcazar, a name that, as per HMIL, draws inspiration from the royal lineage of castles and palaces.
In form, it will be a three-row SUV capable of seating seven passengers. In essence, it will be an extended version of the Creta. That means it will enable HMIL to enter a new segment. The vehicle will make its global debut in India later this year. Only after it goes on sale here will it launch in other markets around the globe.
Here’s what S S Kim, who is the MD and CEO at HMIL, said in an official release:
Hyundai Alcazar will supersede the aspirations of new-age buyers and redefine existing benchmarks to ensure customer delight. As Hyundai completes 25 years in the country, we will re-emphasize our commitment to Indian customers with the global debut of Hyundai Alcazar that is ‘Made in India’ and ‘Made First for India’.
Details such as engine, transmission and variant options aren’t out in the open yet. Considering Hyundai wants to keep the Alcazar a competitive product, it will use the same powertrains that propel the Creta. So, the upcoming seven-seater SUV could have 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel and 1.4-litre turbo-petrol as engine options. Depending on the powerplant chosen, gearbox choices will include a 6-speed manual, 7-speed DCT, IVT and a 6-speed automatic. Even the list of features should fall right in line with that of Creta’s.
Expect Hyundai to unfold the Alcazar bit by bit over the coming weeks. As you’d expect, it will demand a premium over the donor SUV. Once it launches, the Alcazar will compete against the MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV500 and the recently-launched Tata Safari.
