Are you a Hyundai i20, or Elite i20 or i20 Active owner? If yes, it is time to be proud of your choice. Hyundai has announced that its i20 brand has surpassed lifetime global sales of 13 lakh units. Out of that lot, over 8.5 lakh units were sold in India. That roughly translates to over 65 per cent of the i20 sales from India.

Here’s what Vikas Jain, who is the assistant vice president of national sales at Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL), said in an official release:

“We are extremely delighted with this unprecedented milestone that i20 models have achieved 1.3 million global sales and have met the aspirations of Indian and global customers. The i20 established the premium compact segment and has been a stellar brand that personifies Hyundai’s modern premium positioning. It has set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment and continues to dominate with its world-class appeal, performance and looks.”

The first iteration of the Hyundai i20 was introduced in India in the year 2008. That’s a decade ago! Since then, it has positioned itself as an excellent all-rounder in its segment. In the following year, the Hyundai i20 received a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme). That said, it was the European version that excelled in the crash tests.

In 2015, JD Power awarded the Hyundai i20 as the best premium car in initial quality and most appealing premium compact car. During the same year, HMIL announced that the Elite i20 crossed 1 lakh domestic sales in just 11 months after its launch. The following year saw the i20 brand breach the 10-lakh global sales mark.

The Hyundai Elite i20 received its mid-life update during the 2018 Auto Expo. In May this year, the company introduced CVT-equipped variants of its premium compact hatchback. This happened less than a month after Hyundai quietly and mildly updated the i20 Active. In India, the Hyundai Elite i20 goes up against the Honda Jazz and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The i20 Active, however, competes with the likes of the Toyota Etios Cross, Ford FreeStyle and the Fiat Avventura.
