It was only in September 2019 when Toyota updated the Yaris’ portfolio with new trim levels and a lowered starting price tag. Now, the prices of all the sedan’s variants have gone up by Rs 11,000. Consulting the brochure revealed nothing new. So, what is the reason for the price hike? After speaking to a bunch of Toyota dealers, it seems the new prices are for the BS6-compliant Yaris. What that means is that although Toyota hasn’t officially announced it yet, newly booked units of the City-rival will comply with the stricter emission norms. Here’s the revised price list:

The upgraded 1.5-litre petrol engine still produces 106bhp/140Nm, and it is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT. The claimed BSIV mileage figures were 17.1kmpl with the three-pedal setup and 17.8kmpl with the two-pedal configuration. Toyota is yet to confirm those numbers for the BS6 powertrains. Based on the trend we’ve observed in the past, those numbers are likely to drop marginally.

Apart from that, the rest of the kit remains identical. The standard list of features includes 15-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, height-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, three airbags, all-four power windows, rear parking sensors and ABS with EBD and BA. As you move up the hierarchy tree, gizmos such as automatic climate control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system mated to a 6-speaker sound system, 8-way electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, seven airbags, tyre-pressure monitoring system, rear-view camera and cruise control come in the package.

In its segment, the Yaris is the second model to gain the crucial BS6 badge. The first one was the Honda City. Other products such as the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento and the Hyundai Verna should become BS6-ready before we enter the next fiscal. Once we do, the former two will become petrol-only, whereas the Verna will continue to share its upgraded set of powertrains with the Creta.
