Saar: While BMW has been tight-lipped about revealing any numbers for the new X5, we can take away some confirmed aspects about the SUV.
After confirming that the all-new BMW X5 will be launched later this year, the Bavarian carmaker has now officially commenced the teasing procedure. With it, BMW has also revealed which parts of the world the new X5 has been to for it become a, what BMW likes to call, Sports Activity Vehicle. BMW claims that the testing procedure defined for the new X5 focused not only to excel in all the world’s varied climate zones, but also to tackle every kind of terrain there is.
So, this is where the new BMW X5 has been tested:
- Winter testing in Arjeplog, Sweden
- South African gravel tracks
- Desert dune landscapes in the USA
- BMW’s testing grounds in Miramas, France
- On a high-speed circuit in Talladega, Alabama
- Nürburgring, Germany
While BMW doesn’t mind, in fact, relishes sharing the aforementioned testing regime of the X5 with us, it has remained tight-lipped regarding any specific numbers or figures for the SUV. That said, based on the photographs, we can see that the new BMW X5 has a bigger kidney grille on the front and flaunts a boxier silhouette when compared to the outgoing model. Underpinning the fourth-gen X5 is BMW’s CLAR platform, which debuted with the current 7 Series a couple of years ago. The SUV version of the platform was first put under the new BMW X3, which went on sale in India last month. Expect the new BMW X5 to be roomier inside the cabin than before.
Underneath the body, the fourth-gen BMW X5 gets a new suspension setup and chassis control system. BMW claims no other X model has ever received such a setup before. There’s a new off-road package too which, the company says, delivers a good combination of a comfortable ride on tarmac and at the press of a button, transforms the new X5 to tackle the rough stuff perfectly. Some of the clever stuff which makes the configuration list in the new BMW X5 include Adaptive M Suspension Professional and Integral Active Steering, with the latter being offered for the first time.
As far as the powertrains are concerned, almost all are expected to be lifted from the current BMW 5 Series. A plug-in hybrid variant should also make the BMW X5’s portfolio a lot more enticing. And of course, BMW’s M-division will surely be releasing their iteration of the X5 too. Needless to say, the BMW M5 will step up to share its powertrain with the X5 M.
