In a bid to improve the safety quotient of the Redi-Go, Datsun has quietly added ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) to the hatchback’s recipe. In fact, the newly added safety gizmos are part of the standard kit. Other standard safety features include three-point seat belts and child lock on the rear doors. The driver’s side airbag is still reserved for the range-topping S trim.
We are perfectly aware that in a few months, a regulation for standard safety features on a new car will come into effect in India. The list of those features includes rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder for the front two seats, dual airbags, ABS with EBD and a high-speed warning system. That means Datsun will soon update Redi-Go’s package again to make it compliant with the standard safety norms.
The Datsun Redi-Go is a close cousin to the Renault Kwid, which also received a revision in features earlier this year. The Redi-Go is available with three engine-transmission combinations. The entry point is with a 0.8-litre petrol engine which produces 54PS/72Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The same gearbox is also used with the 1.0-litre engine which is good for 68PS/91Nm. The bigger mill can also be had with a 5-speed AMT (automated manual transmission). As you’d expect, the Redi-Go is quite fuel-efficient and can return up to 23kmpl.
In India, the Datsun Redi-Go not only competes with its step-sibling – the Renault Kwid – but also locks horns with both derivatives of the Maruti Suzuki Alto (800 and K10). The Datsun Redi-Go is available in five trims – D, A, T, T (O) and S. Prices for the hatchback start at Rs 2.68 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 4.29 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom Delhi).
