Saar: The production-spec of the flagship model will break cover on June 15, 2018.

BMW unveiled the Concept 8 Series Coupe in May last year. There is no other way of saying it – almost everyone fell in love with its jaw-dropping looks. It was then when BMW also mentioned that the production-spec of the 8 Series Coupe will be launched in 2018. Now though, we have a specific date to look forward to. On June 15, 2018, on the eve of the long-distance race at Le Mans, France, which BMW will be entering after an absence of seven years, the BMW 8 Series Coupe will also make its world premiere.

That’s not all. In the second round of the 2018 FIA World Endurance Championship, BMW will unveil the M variant of the 8 Series. In BMW nomenclature, it will be the M850i xDrive Coupe. After these two variants go on sale later this year, we’d have to wait until next year for more 8 Series action. In 2019, BMW plans to round off the 8 Series family with the Gran Coupe versions in standard and M8 avatar.

In a nutshell, the BMW 8 Series is likely to have four variants in its near future and BMW has been extremely tight-lipped about what will be powering them. If we had to take a calculated guess, we’d say the engines from the 7 Series saloon will do duty in the 8 Series too. All four variants are likely to feature the twin-turbo, 4.4-litre V8 albeit in different state of tunes for the standard and M-marked 8 Series.

<Speculation Starts> For the 8 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe, BMW is likely to offer the same engine tune as the 750i. That means it will have 450PS/650Nm on tap. Power will be routed to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. For the M-marked variants, i.e. the M8 Coupe and M8 Gran Coupe, BMW will bring in the engine tune from the new M5 Competition, which was recently revealed. In essence, the 8-speed M-spec automatic transmission will propel all four wheels with 625PS/750Nm of oomph. <Speculation Ends>

BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe

We love speculating on what could power what in the world of automobiles. For the 8 Series though, BMW has confirmed that the M-marked 8 Series will have a new V8 under the hood, intelligent four-wheel drive, controlled rear axle differential lock, integral active steering, adaptive M suspension tech, active roll stabilisation and 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels. Oh boy, that’s a whole lotta tech on-board!
