Saar: The concept in flesh will be showcased during next month’s Monterey Car Week to only a few sets of eyes.
After revealing a couple of futuristic sketches of the PF0 hypercar in April this year, Automobili Pininfarina has now gone ahead and released three more. This is for regular folks like us. But for some super-wealthy VIPs and select journalists, the Mahindra-owned company will showcase the concept in flesh during the Monterey Car Week, which is scheduled run for three days from August 24-26, 2018. Don’t get disheartened though because if reports are to be believed, the same concept will make a world debut during next year’s Geneva Motor Show.
Based on the last press release, we know what kind of performance figures the company is claiming for its first ultra-low volume, ultra-luxurious full-electric hypercar. The Munich-based carmaker says that the figures for 0-100kmph, 0-300kmph and top speed will be less than 2 seconds, less than 12 seconds and greater than 400kmph respectively. The pure-electric powertrain is expected to churn out around 2,000PS (Gulp!). Even after boasting such explosive performance, the powertrain will be efficient enough for a range of over 500km on a single charge. That, of course, will be applicable only if you don’t drive like a lunatic.
We also know that the car will boast active torque vectoring, thanks to four electric motors – one for each wheel. But a media report has managed to unearth more specific details about the car. Unlike most modern electric cars, which have the battery pack lying flat under the floor, the Pininfarina PF0 will it confined to the centre tunnel instead. That, as per the company, will help in delivering hypercar-like dynamics.
Automobili Pininfarina will adopt the top-down approach for launching its four, pure-electric, products in the coming year. The first of which is the PF0 hypercar and that should launch in the second half of next year. The company is targeting a global sales number between 125 to 150 for its super-expensive product. Since we’ve now touched upon the price point, expect it to be at par or above the Bugatti Chiron and company. That means it should hover in the range of 2-3 million USD.
The report also says that after launching the PF0 hypercar, Automobili Pininfarina will bring in a crossover of some sorts. The company touched upon this in April 2018. That product doesn’t even have a codename yet but will be targeted to take on the pure-electric, luxurious SUVs from across the globe.
The company reportedly said that it is not looking to develop everything in-house. Instead, it will have contracts running with companies that develop battery packs, motors and the electric circuitry that goes along in gelling everything together. Mahindra’s Racing team, which competes and does well in Formula E Championship, will be the core developer for the electric powertrain that will do duty in the Pininfarina PF0. And Pininfarina will do what it has done best for several decades – design it.
