Saar: The first car to receive them will be the Audi e-tron, which will be built in Brussels.

German carmaker Audi has started the production of electric motors at its facility in Győr, Hungary. The first car to receive them will be Audi’s first-ever pure-electric vehicle – the e-tron. The model was earlier scheduled to break cover at the Audi Summit in August this year. But the event was postponed due to the diesel crises that the company is currently fighting. The Audi e-tron, however, will be built in Brussels – the capital of Belgium and over 1,200km away from Győr, Hungary.

Audi claims that with the current working hours, the Hungarian facility can produce approximately 400 electric axle motors every day. Presently, about a 100 people are employed in the production facility of electric motors and by the end of the year, the count will surpass 130. Even the production will expand, from the current single shift to three shifts.

The company is also proud of some of the new features that its electric motors will have. Inside the stator, which is a core component in a motor assembly, Audi is aiming to insert as much of the thin enamelled copper wire as possible into the casing. Science says the tighter the winding, the more efficient the power delivery. Talk about getting into the details!

The Audi e-tron will be equipped with two electric axle drive systems – one for the front wheels and one for the rear. Result? The electric Quattro drive system. Audi likes to get into the details and with the electric axle, it made no exception. The electric axle is made of several components including power electronics, which are located in their own housing, the gearing and two flange shafts which will route the power from the electric motor to the wheels.

The global unveiling of the Audi e-tron will happen sometime during the last four months of this calendar year. Once done, it will first go on sale in Europe, followed by the USA.
