Audi India has silently expanded the A5’s portfolio. It has introduced two new variants, both wearing the 35 TDI badge. While the Sportback is priced at Rs 55.42 lakh, the Cabriolet gets a price tag of Rs 69.26 lakh (both are ex-showroom prices). Strangely, the latter is priced exactly the same as the 40 TDI Cabriolet Quattro variant. At least, that’s what’s mentioned on Audi India’s website. As far as the 35 TDI Sportback is concerned, it is Rs 4.97 lakh less expensive than 40 TDI variant.

Powering the newly introduced variants is the same 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine that does duty in the 40 TDI variants. However, instead of 190PS/400Nm, the 35 TDI state of tune pumps out 150PS/320Nm. Do the math and you’ll end up with a deficit of 40PS/80Nm. Transmission duties are handled by a 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic unit which feeds the power to the front wheels. Needless to say, with reduced power the performance figures won’t match with those from the 40 TDI state of tune.

On the features front, the new entrants in the A5 line-up offer a lot. The list includes LED-powered headlamps, dynamic indicators and taillamps, headlight washers, rear-view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels and electrically adjustable, foldable, auto-dimming and heated ORVMs. Inside the cabin, the list of gizmos covers three-zone climate control, Audi’s MMI Navigation Plus system, cruise control, Virtual Cockpit and powered front seats. If you are an Audi fan, you must have noticed that many of those features are also available in the less expensive A4 sedan.

The Audi A5 Sportback doesn’t really have a direct rival in India. The A5 Cabriolet, on the hand, has the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible as the sole competitor. If you had the money, which one would you choose? Let us know in the comments section.
