It was in June last year when the new BMW X5 made its world premiere. After launching in more important markets around the globe, it was evitable to come to India. That time is almost here. BMW India has confirmed that the all-new X5 will launch on May 16, 2019. Compared to its predecessor, the fourth-gen SUV is longer, wider, taller and benefits from a bigger wheelbase. The pluses in all those respects promise a roomier cabin.
In all likelihood, the new BMW X5 will commence its Indian innings with just one powertrain option, carrying the xDrive30d badge. Under the bonnet will be a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine which produces 265PS/620Nm and mated to it will be a mild-hybrid system with brake energy recuperation function. The oomph will be fed to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW claims that the 2.2-tonne SUV can hit 100kmph from a standstill in 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 230kmph.
The all-new BMW X5 is expected to land in two trim levels – xLine and M Sport. Choosing the former will bring features like 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive air suspension, multiple drive modes, ambient lighting, two 12.3-inch displays with one serving as the digital instrument cluster and the other as a touchscreen infotainment system with voice command, Apple CarPlay and gesture control, electric seats and tyre pressure monitoring system. The more aggressively styled, loaded and priced M Sport trim will get features such as 20-inch light alloy wheels with run-flat tyres, a bunch of M-specific panels inside and out, and a sportier upholstery theme.
BMW India will assemble the new X5 at its facility in Chennai. Prices are expected to start around Rs 75 lakh and go up to Rs 85 lakh (ex-showroom India). Once launched, it will renew its rivalry with the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Volvo XC90. Just like its rivals do, the X5 will also get a petrol engine option in the near future.
