It isn’t a secret that Mahindra and Ford are jointly working on multiple projects for the Indian as well as several other markets in the world. One of those projects is developing an electric vehicle (EV) and that will launch as a Ford India product in 2021. Which one? The sensible and compact sedan Aspire will gain an ‘e’ in its nameplate to become the eAspire.
Confirmed set of details, as you’d expect, are next to none at the moment. But we can take a stroll down speculation street to try and join some dots together. Mahindra is currently developing two EVs – the eKUV100 and the S210. The latter is actually the codename for the electric XUV300. As far as the eKUV100 is concerned, it will see a market launch before 2019 comes to a close. A year later, the electric sub-4 metre SUV will become available.
Okay! Don’t get confused. We had to touch upon those Mahindra products to place the eAspire appropriately. Bear with us! The refreshed Aspire was launched in India last year. That means the next-gen model should be with us in 2021. And that will be developed in such a manner that its underpinnings are suitable for the same powertrain that will propel the electric XUV300. When you consider the fact that both models are in the sub-4 metre category, the dot-joining makes more sense.
Other projects that Ford and Mahindra are jointly working on include developing a C-segment SUV and one compact SUV. The former, which will have Mahindra-developed powertrain and platform, will become a direct rival to the Tata Harrier, MG Hector and the Jeep Compass. The duo is also developing a vehicle telematics system which will be fitted to future Mahindra and Ford models.
