2021 is a landmark year for Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) as it completes 25 years. On May 6, 1996, company officials laid the manufacturing facility’s foundation at Irungattukkottai in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. When it came to life in September 1998, the plant became Hyundai’s first integrated production hub outside South Korea. And the first car it produced was the Santro, which is nothing short of an icon for the brand.

So, what has HMIL achieved in a quarter of a century? Here are some of the highlights:

• To date, it has sold over 90 lakh cars.
• It has invested more than 4 Billion USD in strengthening the roots.
• The sales and service network has expanded to 1,154 and 1,298 outlets, respectively.
• In December 2020, it achieved the highest production output in a single month. The figure was 71,000.
• The production plant can manufacture 7.5 lakh cars every year.
• Exports have steadily grown over the years. Presently, Hyundai ships India-made cars to 88 countries.
• Exports count was at 5 lakh units in 2008. That rose past 30 lakh by the end of 2020.
• In CY2020, HMIL’s market share stood at 17.4 per cent – its highest ever.
• Last year, the company claimed the No. 1 SUV brand’s title by selling over 1.8 lakh units.
• Renewable sources to provide 85 per cent of the manufacturing facility’s energy requirements in 2021.
• Nearly 14 per cent of cars produced are dispatched via rail to cut down on emissions and carbon footprint.
• The Kona Electric became India’s first fully-electric SUV, whereas the Venue bagged India’s first fully-connected SUV title.
• HMIL became the first carmaker to introduce a clutchless manual transmission – iMT.

That isn’t the complete list. However, it is enough to paint a picture that perfectly portrays HMIL’s grip in the Indian automobile scene.
