We know MG Motor India’s second product offering will be the all-electric ZS EV. We know that India isn’t quite ready to adopt the whole concept of zero-emissions mobility due to lack of supporting infrastructure. And yes, we also know that a lot is being done to not only create awareness about electric mobility but also to make electric vehicles more appealing as well as sustainable.

We know other ways to start sentences. Seriously! Oh, darn it! Anyway, let’s give it another shot. MG Motor India has partnered with Delta Electronics India to install EV (electric vehicle) charging points. See, we told you! According to the agreement, the power and energy management company will set up AC chargers at several locations covering parking areas, homes and offices. Two in a row! The carmaker wants a reasonable infrastructure in place before introducing its EV.

Why do you guys think that AC and not DC chargers are coming up? Well, as per our calculations, there are three main reasons – cost, battery life preservation and the electricity feeds going to existing buildings. For the uninitiated, a DC (direct current) EV charger can do its thing at a much higher rate than the one built on AC (alternating current) concept. So, the whole kit for a DC charger is way more expensive to procure, install and maintain than its lesser alternative.

The second reason is based on one simple fact – excessive use of rapid/fast/DC chargers can hamper battery life of an EV. So, although they will juice-up the battery quicker, it is the AC chargers which are less harmful.

Then we arrive at the second reason. All the existing buildings which include parking lots, residential localities and office complexes, weren’t built to accommodate DC EV chargers. Let us put it this way, a flat in a multi-story complex is, on an average, has mains electricity of about 6 kW. For a DC charger to show its true potential, that feed needs to be at least ten times higher. And even it is, the electricity feed will still split between the EV charger and the other appliances in the household.

Quite a lesson there, wasn’t it! Anyway, let’s get back to the car in question. Earlier, MG Motor India confirmed that the ZS EV will be launched in December 2019. Now, however, the launch date has been pushed forward. The company says that the launch will happen in early 2020. Still excited? We know we are! Oh, darn it! Not again!
