There’s no doubt that the Nexon has been a success for Tata Motors. In fact, the sub-4 metre SUV surpassed the one-lakh production milestone in less than two years since its launch. However, the Nexon will be given another, a much more difficult project – enable Tata Motors to become a force to be reckoned with in the personal EV (electric vehicle) space. Yes, the homegrown automaker is prepping an all-electric version of the Nexon. It will become one of the four EVs that Tata Motors plans to launch in the next 18 months.

Presently, there are no confirmed set of details available for the Nexon EV (possible name). However, we can make some calculated speculations. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, Tata Motors unveiled the Altroz in both the conventionally-powered form and in a pure electric iteration. The latter, by the way, is the second of the four EVs planned. Since the Altroz will be placed in the premium hatchback segment, we believe that its all-electric cousin could share the powertrain with the Nexon EV. Compatibility issues, however, could a deal-breaker since the Altroz will be built on the ALFA architecture.

The Altroz EV is likely to be propelled by a single electric motor, mounted on the front axle. There’s no word on the battery size but the targeted range on a single charge is between 250-300km. With the help of rapid charging technology, the Altroz EV is expected to replenish its lithium-ion pack from zero to 80 per cent in 60 minutes.

With mild updates received last month, the Nexon will also be due for a mid-life refresh in 2020. That means Tata Motors is likely to introduce the Nexon EV in refreshed form only. The company is also lining-up a more potent version of the Tigor EV. The fourth model, however, is currently unknown. Our guess would be a zero-emissions variant of the H2X Concept, which we’ll get to see in production guise at next year’s Auto Expo.
